Wetland ecosystems are critical habitats for avian species, particularly in tropical regions where biodiversity is exceptionally high. This study investigates the effectiveness of wetland restoration projects on bird diversity and abundance in the Western Ghats region of Kerala, India. We monitored bird populations across 15 restored wetland sites and 10 control sites over a 24-month period using standardized point counts and mist netting techniques. Species richness, abundance, and community composition were analyzed using multivariate statistical methods. Results indicate a significant increase in bird species richness (40%) and abundance (65%) in restored sites compared to control areas. Specialist wetland species showed the most pronounced recovery, with waterbird populations increasing by 80%. The study demonstrates that targeted wetland restoration can effectively enhance avian biodiversity and provides a framework for future conservation efforts in tropical wetland ecosystems.
